Drake Cottage is conveniently situated to visit local attractions in Saffron Walden itself but also perfect for visiting Cambridge, London and Suffolk.
The cottage is minutes away from the centre of Saffron Walden so visitors can take advantage of all that the town has to offer including Bridge End Gardens and maze, The Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden Museum and Saffron Walden Golf Club. The main entrance to historic Audley End House and Gardens is a short 20 minute walk away from the cottage and the Audley End Estate which is open all year round is only a 4 minute walk away.
The historic city of Cambridge is a short 20 minute drive away and for those who prefer to leave the car at home it is a similar 20 minute train ride away using Audley End Station. Visitors can tour the famous colleges, take a punt cruise on the Cam , visit the Fitzwilliam Museum or enjoy the many world class shops and restaurants.
The cottage is a perfect base for visiting London and all that it has to offer whether visiting Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, the London Eye or one of the many museums. Park your car at nearby Audley End railway station and take an easy train ride into the capital and be back in time for an early evening pint at one of Saffron Walden’s attractive pubs – The Cross Keys, The Eight Bells are two pub restaurants that Deb the owner recommends.
Stansted Mountfichet is only a 30 minute drive away allowing an easy visit to the House on the Hill Toy Museum or Stansted Mountfichet Castle .
Newmarket, England’s headquarters for horse racing is a half hour drive away and racing aficionados can enjoy a visit to The National Stud and the National Horse Racing Museum.
The beautiful Suffolk coastline with its popular seaside towns of Aldburgh, Southwold and Orford is a 2 hour day trip away.
For those who enjoy visiting historic houses Anglesey Abbey , Wimpole Hall, Hedingham Castle and Kentwell Hall are all a short drive away.
The Imperial War Museum at Duxford is only 8 miles away from the cottage and is a favourite place of ours to visit through out the year. It is Britain’s best-preserved Second World War airfield, with a fascinating history that dates back to the First World War. Historic buildings sit alongside striking contemporary exhibition halls; AirSpace and the American Air Museum with amazing displays of iconic aircraft and the powerful stories of the men and women involved. It also has one of the finest collections of tanks, military vehicles and artillery. Not to be missed.
