Location

The cottage is situated in the heart of the medieval town of Saffron Walden, Essex and is perfectly situated for visiting Audley End House, Cambridge, Suffolk or London. Audley End Station with its frequent trains to both London & Cambridge is a convenient 10 minute drive from the cottage.

The approach to Saffron Walden from the north is regarded as one of the most beautiful approaches to any town in the United Kingdom. As you drive down the wooded hill to the town the narrow medieval streets are immediately visible with the Eight Bells Public House on the left and the 15th century grade I listed 1 Myddylton Place on the right. The cottage can be found by turning immediately right after this splendid house and into the quiet backwater that is Myddylton Place.

The cottage is part of the conservation area of the town and the nearby Audley End Park is a very short walk away as shown on the Google Earth map below.

Parking for Drake Cottage is on street parking and usually visitors are able to park right outside the cottage. Please be considerate of the other residents in Myddylton Place and be sure not to block any access. Cars can also be parked for a small fee in The Swan Meadow Car Park shown on the map below.  Access to Swan Meadow Car Park, when driving, is from the main road, go north out of Myddylton Place and before you get to the hill turn left and follow signs for Swan Meadow car park and Saffron Walden Golf Club. Return to the cottage on foot by a different route that will only take you two minutes via the duck pond on your left and part way along Park Lane. Look for the ‘cut in’ in the brick wall on the left and follow it through to Walden Place and you will see the cottage ahead of you.
