We try to show up to date reviews of the cottage whenever possible and they are taken from the VRBO and recently the AirBnB website and as such, are entirely independent reviews of our cottage. Both sites ask the guests for comments and the owner of the property is able to reply. VRBO also ask for a star rating. Sometimes the guest rating seems of a lesser value than the comments would seem to reflect but our hope is that they give you a genuine picture of the cottage. You can view. our replies to the guests on VRBO and Airbnb.
You will notice a gap in the summer of 2022 and that’s because we stayed at the cottage ourselves and yes, we loved it.
Should any of the reviews prompt a question please don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll do our best to answer as honestly as we can. It’s extremely important to us that you find a match for what you’re looking for in your holiday cottage as we don’t want you to be disappointed or misled.

Magical visit to Drake Cottage! From the first interaction with Deb this was easy to book, the cottage was centrally located, but quiet and a wonderful visit. My niece was enchanted with the cottage. It was cozy and comfortable, with the tea cups out, milk in the fridge and biscuits ready for that first cup. Deb had Lucy decorate the cottage for the holidays and that added to the festive air. Deb gave some great local recommendations and we took advantage of them. They were spot on. All in all a wonderful visit with amazing hosts, who were responsive and helpful. Looking forward to a return trip sometime soon! Thank you for a great visit-you’ve thought of everything!

We had a wonderful stay at Drake Cottage, it is a beautiful place, very quirky, spotlessly clean & perfectly located – just be careful on the staircase as quite hard to use (obviously due to the age and nature of the house it is difficult to have anything else) and make sure you ‘duck’ for doorways
This all makes the stay even more authentic and perfect, a privilege to stay in such an historic property and a great and comfortable place to look forward to returning to after visiting all the nearby sites

This place has had glowing reviews from so many people – probably best that we simply endorse that previous praise. Medieval buildings must be very hard to maintain, plus the difficulty in balancing authentic look with the convenience and utility that we modern folk cherish. Drake Cottage has been done with great thought and consideration of all those factors. We were both charmed and comfortable. In short, excellent and as described. Lovely cottage

Perfect !
We stayed for a few nights birthday surprise for my best friend.The cottage was perfect.Proximity to the town fantastic,no traffic noise ect..but the best part of all is the added touches that meke you feel welcome and special…all toiletries,hairdryers,milk,tea,coffee,an amnesty basket incase you have forgotten anything and then the towelling robes to sit in the gorgeous lounge watching a film with hot chocolate in hand.Id like to say thankyou for allowing us the privilege to stay in your beautiful grade 1 listed building,if those walls could talk im sure they would be happy with the loving way its been renovated. We had such a nice stay at Drake Cottage! We had originally wanted to stay closer to Cambridge, but this place in Saffron Walden turned out to be way better! The cottage is in a very attractive and walkable area of the town with tons of restaurants just a few minutes walk away. The cottage itself was so clean and the kitchen was very well equipped. The ceilings/beams/doorways were very low in some places, so beware if you’re a tall person! We would 100% recommend this place!

Airbnb need to have new category “super duper host”. Deb was so warm and friendly, and taking time to give us her latest restaurant recommendations; also talking about the history of the historic house. Lucy co-host was equally lovely and friendly.

We stayed at Drake Cottage on the return to the UK after living in Australia for two years and whilst waiting for our rental property to become available. We had the most wonderful time staying at the cottage, it was immaculate throughout and it had everything we needed and more.
We absolutely loved the character of the building and the renovation has been beautifully done. The cottage was so cosy but there was plenty of room for the four of us. We had a great time getting to know the area, it is a lovely town and so easy to get to the shops from the cottage. We only wish we could have stayed for longer!
Thank you for making our return to the UK so fabulous, we will definitely be recommending the cottage to visiting friends/family in the future.

It is SO conveniently situated, literally in the middle of town, yet the cul de sac is quiet and tucked away. Parking space is a real bonus too!
The cottage has everything you need, very well equipped and beautifully decorated.

Charming Heritage Cottage

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely old house that suited our needs perfectly. We ate in and found the kitchen to be one of the best equipped. Deb has thought of everything, there are even food bag clips, kitchen scales, and spare batteries should you need them. The beds are comfortable and the bed linen is crisp and pretty.
We had an issue with the dishwasher and Lucy the housekeeper dealt with it promptly and in a very friendly way. She checked in to make sure all was well once it was sorted. The cottage was spotlessly clean on arrival with a card and wine for our anniversary which was a lovely touch.
The upstairs is quirky and cleverly designed to use the space – but don’t book if you have trouble bending down or with steep stairs!
Saffron Walden is a beautiful town with a wealth of medieval and later buildings. There is a large National Trust style garden that is free to visit. We attended an international-quality concert at Saffron Hall.

Hard to say how much we loved staying at the Cottage which is stunning. Everything is beautifully clean and the hosts have thought of everything to make a comfortable stay. For such a historic cottage it’s actually spacious with a large dining table and kitchen. Bedrooms also have plenty of room. The beds and bedding are luxurious and comfortable and the shower pressure very good. Location could not be better being a couple of minutes walk to shops. We had a wonderful stay and our hosts were incredibly responsive and helpful with any questions or help we required.

Drake Cottage
We found the cottage to be everything we required in comfort and modern convenience while retaining the feeling of old-world charm. It was beautifully appointed for self-catering and was spotlessly clean. The beds, pillows and the bedding were luxurious and more comfortable than any we have ever experienced over many years of both hotel and self-catering holidays. The location of the cottage was superb for access to the town centre. it made for a most interesting and relaxing holiday venue.

Quirky but beautiful cottage
Ideally situated, this property is what my 6 year old would describe as a “wonky donkey ” house! It is beautiful but you have to be very aware upstairs if you are tall (there are warnings in the guest book etc). The only slight frustration and not one the owners can control is the parking. Despite signs saying the parking outside was for Drake Cottage people parked there regardless and so we had to unload and put our car in the local public car park but realistically that is a first world problem!!! All in all a fabulous stay

“Super spot in Saffron Walden“
Charming and comfortable cottage to stay in the heart of the medieval market town. Has everything you need: very well equipped kitchen, cosy living room, comfortable beds, with lovely linens, good shower with powerful spray and plenty of hot water, big tub if you want a soak. Little outside garden area for fine weather. Walking distance from center of SF, Saffron Hall for concerts, Audley End. Only downside, which I think would not be an issue for most is the narrow, turning staircase with low overhead beams to access the upstairs. We are in our late 60s and could manage it fine, but if you were very tall, or not terribly mobile, this might be an issue. We loved the cottage and would certainly return.

After weeks on the road the Bosch washer/dryer was most welcome. The private patio was a perfect hideaway for morning coffee, afternoon tea, evening wine: flowers blooming, birds singing. We were greeted with a generous welcome tray: coffee, tea, shortbread biscuits, and milk in the fridge. Audley End House and Garden are within walking distance. Closer is Bridge End Garden, a lovely surprise. Lunch at The Eight Bells-within a grade II listed building- was delectable and also an easily walkable distance. We had items to ship home and found everything we needed to do so (including a UPS shipment desk at a local business) in walking distance. Housekeeper Lucy is commendable. The cottage was spotless, everything was in good working order. Lucy also quickly responded to our questions.

Drake cottage is lovely, nicely restored keeping some of the ancient look and feel but in the same time nice and comfortable. We had a great time (family with two teenagers) and even had breakfast (brunch) in the little courtyard. We all managed to bump our head once or twice but that was actually more funny than a nuisance. If there’s one thing less positive it must be the parking situation, I had to use the public parking (paid and at a couple of hundred yards) most of the time. No drama, it’s not expensive and close by, but less convenient than anticipated. All in all a great place to stay!

It was very clean and well maintained, with everything they needed for the whole stay. Lovely beds and bed linen and towels and all the kitchen appliances needed. They had a great time. They did struggle with the low beams and stairs as they are both in their 70’s, but this was made very clear in the ad, so we can’t complain! Thanks for a lovely stay!!! |

| My parents stayed in the cottage whilst visiting me in Saffron Walden and had a lovely time, it was a minutes walk from my house and from the centre of town, so the location could not have been better. It was very clean and well maintained, with everything they needed for the whole stay. Lovely beds and bed linen and towels and all the kitchen appliances needed. They had a great time. They did struggle with the low beams and stairs as they are both in their 70’s, but this was made very clear in the ad, so we can’t complain! Thanks for a lovely stay!!! |

It has everything you need for a proper cook. Being so close to the centre of town was a bonus. There’s plenty to do in the area. We’d never thought of staying in Saffron Walden before. It’s a lovely place and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. |

| My parents stayed in the cottage whilst visiting me in Saffron Walden and had a lovely time, it was a minutes walk from my house and from the centre of town, so the location could not have been better. It was very clean and well maintained, with everything they needed for the whole stay. Lovely beds and bed linen and towels and all the kitchen appliances needed. They had a great time. They did struggle with the low beams and stairs as they are both in their 70’s, but this was made very clear in the ad, so we can’t complain! Thanks for a lovely stay!!! |

| We fell in love with the cottage as soon as we saw it on the website. We were not disappointed at all, on the contrary the cottage offered more than we could have had expected. It is situated in a very tranquil area 5 minutes from the centre of Saffron Walden. /People in the area were very friendly. The cottage itself is stunning, quirky, full of character and at the same time very comfortable. Lovely bedrooms with comfy beds, big kitchen/dinner and a cosy sitting room. Due to the current circumstances we decided to have our meals at home and the kitchen provided all we needed to cook lovely meals. The cottage was immaculate, with lovely china and bed linen. I agree with Deb, Lucy looks after the cottage with perfection. Communication with both Deb and Lucy were excellent, quick responses and helpful. Everything was perfect and we enjoyed so much our stay that we will definitively come back. |

“Beautiful and charming cottage in a lovely village. Quiet street, but at the same time real close to local shops, the market etc. Both in the village and in the nearby area there are many places to visit. We’ve had a great time. On the stairs and upstairs you have to watch your head because of the ancient beams, but we got used to that real soon. So don’t let that stop you from renting this place! We have seen many holliday-cottages and this is one of the finest.”

Without overdoing it, it is fair to say the cottage was perfect. The tea tray and pint of milk on arrival were a welcome sight after a long drive, it was warm and spotlessly clean. The cottage is in a great location, to be able to walk into the centre to have a meal locally of an evening was lovely, but tucked away around the corner it was also very quiet.
Practically the cottage has everything you would need from kitchen essentials to a hairdryer. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning.”

“Our four night stay exceeded our expectations.The cottage is a delight and it’s location is perfect for discovering the many attractions of Saffron Walden and nearby villages.We were very comfortable and we soon got used to ” ducking” under the low beams.The property is just as described and it’s quite clear that it’s much loved.
It was carefully prepared for our arrival. We found it to be well equipped and enjoyed cooking in the charming kitchen after buying fresh produce from the great little Saturday morning market.. (I think it’s held on Tuesdays too.)
We were happy to spend a day exploring Saffron Walden and were delighted to discover beautiful gardens, a great local museum, 2 mazes, a labyrinth, and outstanding architecture at every turn.
What a happy few days we had where everything exceeded our expectations.
We are so pleased we found Drake Cottage and we hope to return one day.”

“In our Dreams”
We have stayed at Drake Cottage for almost 2 months and really feel like it is home. It is like we lived here a long time ago. Sometimes in our dreams we have this house and we want this lifestyle!
The children and I are really happy here and it has been the most important thing in our experience. When somebody is happy at home you want to stay here and we would like to spend more time here.

“Truly Great”
The cottage is truly great! All modern conveniences incorporated in such historical and tastefully decorated accommodation.Lucy welcomed us on arrival. She is a very friendly lady and explained everything in detail to us. “A Swan not a Duck”
Our family of 5 have just spent a week at this simply beautiful cottage. Everything you need to make your stay easy has been considered, location is great, the cottage is stunning (yes head height issues with some doorways but it adds to the charm). We are moving to Saffron Walden soon and our only regret is we probably won’t need to stay here again….but would definitely recommend to family and friends.

“Fantastic cosy retreat”
We stayed at this fabulously furnished and equipped cottage for only four days and wish it had been a lot longer. The cottage is quirky and full of character and you soon get used to the low beams and stairs. Its one of the best equipped and furnished cottages we have stayed in and both Deb and Lucy deserve the highest compliments for the high standards of care and cleanliness. We would recommend this treasure to everyone who gets a chance to stay in the area and we will certainly be back if and when we can.

We just had the most remarkable two weeks in Drake Cottage,our dream of an old English cottage came true at long last,the cottage is to die for all mod-cons and every thing to detail, We would recommend it to every one we meet who wants to spend time in that part of the world ,the town has every thing you need ,great eating places and great shopping,no need to go any where ,but we traveled every day to somewhere new and wonderful, We were lucky the English weather was kind also, Lucy the wonderful housekeeper treats you with such kindness,and willingness to please could not have done more; she is to be commended. “Authentic Period Cottage”
Drake cottage is a typical period cottage however, the attention to detail is remarkable, which made our stay so enjoyable. Modernised to a very high standard is a well equipped kitchen, open plan dining and through to a cosy lounge. Up a quirky staircase to a beautiful bathroom and two very tasteful comfortable bedrooms with crisp White Linen and one en-suite. There is also a small sun trapped BBQ walled garden area to the rear, which we made good use of. The cottage location is great, a short walk takes you to centre of town where you have all the shopping you could wish for and parkland on the door step. A great week and look forward to future visits.

Saffron experience
The house has to grow on you and the longer you stay there the more you like it. The ground floor is perfect from the start. To get upstairs you have to acquire a certain climbing skill especially if trying to get a suitcase there. Once you have learned this and learned to avoid a beam that stretches across the corridor at 1.62 m you are all set to the enjoy the property to the full. And what a property it is: Well maintained, fully equiped and a caretaker to let you in the first time. The house is one of the oldest in Saffron Walden, is in the middle of town, has a parking place in front of it and the outside looks like a decor of a fairy tale. The cottage has brand new equipment. Even the chairs are confortable. Within Saffron Waldon all shops, sights and restaurants are within walking distance. Sometimes there is a hiil on your way there however. If you want to enjoy England as it should be enjoyed, go to Saffron Waldon. If you want to enjoy Saffron Waldon as it should be enjoyed, stay at this property.

“A lovely time was had by myself and my girlfriend over the Easter weekend here. The listing description was 100% accurate regarding the location, layout and facilities. The property was spotlessly clean on arrival.The owner Deb and housekeeper Lucy were very friendly and nice, giving excellent customer service from the time of arranging the booking until departing the cottage. “It’s just like the picture showed. yet better. The most amazing cottage dating back to the 15th century. The cottage was recently remodeled, is well maintained and beautifully decorated. A great place to enjoy and relax. We came to visit our daughter now living in the UK and fell in love with the cottage and this market town. Everything, shopping, dining etc. was in easy walking distance from the cottage. We also explored the surrounding area and had lunch at the Cricketer in Clavering, Jamie Oliver’s parents place. “Seriously, I can honestly say that it is as good as it can be and there are no other improvements I would make or suggest. We have fallen in love with Drake Cottage.
